Asubu – Departures
A classically trained musician, raised on a rich diet of Motown, Funk, Jazz and Classical, found his way into Electronic music through pioneering groups such as Leftfield, Underworld, Prodigy and the Chemical Brothers. Growing up in South London, was also heavily influenced by the emerging Garage scene of the mid 90’s following this through into House, Techno, Drum and Bass, Dubstep, Minimal and everything in between but always with a continued hunger for innovation and the sound of something new.
Asubu’s love of music saw him buy his first set of turntables at the age of 14 and start DJ’ing professionally soon after, allowing him rare insight into London’s hedonistic club scene from a young age, before he could legally enter as a punter. A vinyl junkie and a regular in London’s record shops ever since then, along with various record shops around the world, amassing an impressive and ever growing record collection, spanning 3 decades of music.
The love of innovation and the increasing frustration of club systems not being prepared for vinyl DJ’s has meant that Asubu has embraced the evolution of DJ equipment and now plays using a complex set up of vinyl, Traktor and various controllers. The ethos stays the same though, the aim simply to lace together all the sounds he loves in a way that works for the time and environment, creating sets of music, limited by nothing but quality music, innovation and ultimately the desire for escapism through music.
Asubu hosts Departures every Sunday night from 10pm until midnight, where you can expect an eclectic set of upfront Electronic music, recent finds and other undiscovered favourites. Expect a journey of House, Techno through to Jazz and Classical and everything in between, with the ultimate goal to wind down the weekend and inspire you for the week ahead.
