Kev Matthews
Kev Matthews (born March 26 1981) is an electro, progressive and house producer/DJ based in South East London.
Kev started messing around with mixing at the age of 16 with a friend from school (John Rees). Back then he didn’t own a pair of turntables so any mixing was done at John’s house as and when time permitted.
At this time Kev was mixing Jungle and Drum ‘n’ Bass and was starting to get quite a collection of vinyl together. It eventually came to the point where Kev had to get a set of decks for himself, so saving up from a part time job he bought his first set of decks and a mixer. The classic Sound Lab DLP1600′s were in full swing.
The record collection got larger and the belts on the turntables got slacker as all Kev would do in his spare time is perfect his mixing styles and do mix tapes for all his friends.
Came the time to upgrade….What a time it was too!! Technic 1210′s could not be found for love nor money. Every shop Kev visited, called or wrote to had nothing. Gold dust was more common.
After a solid three weeks of searching Kev found a small shop in Islington (North London) that had a pair. “Can you hold them for me”? NO CHANCE. Kev took the risk and jumped in the car.
With cash in hand he walked into the shop and asked for the 1210′s. “Sorry Mate I only have one”! “Who buys one deck”? the shop attendant laughed at what Kev could only think was the worst joke in the world.
The deal was done and the real mixing was to begin…..
At 18 Kev started to buy UK Garage tunes and soon enough the collection was just as big as the Drum ‘n’ Bass.
Kev built up a good relationship with his local record shop owner and used to use the decks behind the counter to mix tunes he was looking to buy. One Saturday Kev was approached by someone in the shop who heard his mixing, asking if he would like a set on a new pirate station (Shakedown FM). Kev Jumped at the chance without even thinking. He didn’t even have a DJ Name. Walking home he saw a sign saying CAUTION – EAR PROTECTION REQUIRED on a building site. DJ CAUTION stuck from there. After a few sets on the station, it all stopped as the station was taken off air but it wasn’t long before DJ Caution was back on a new station (Soundz 94.3).
This is where Kev made a name for himself. Two years went by and the bookings for clubs and bars were coming in thick and fast. DJ Caution started to become a DJ people came to see play.
Caution moved around stations in London and Kent such as TWI, MDFM and Impact FM until it came to the point he wanted something new.
Caution Hung up his headphones and exchanged them for monitors.
Over a number of years Kev put together a studio bit by bit and started producing his own tracks. He even put himself through college for 2 years to widen his knowledge of sound and beat mapping.
UK Garage, Bassline and funky house were coming from his studio monitors and even remixes for other producers.
Eventually Kev couldn’t stand being away from the public eye anymore and hooked up with an old promoter and good friend Dave Brinson who soon got Caution back behind the decks. Bookings came once again…
After a while Kev decided to retire the name of DJ Caution and the UK Garage genre and reverted back to Kev Matthews. He kept along the style of electro and progressive house and soon this was all that was being produced in his studio.
You can catch Kev every Monday 4-6pm on Selectukradio.com playing the best in Progressive and electro house.
Its been 14 years of hard work and sheer determination for Kev to get where he is today and the hard work never stops.
Using what he has learned in these 14 years is what makes his sound Original.
